Over 25 years, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) has made grants to thousands of nonprofit organizations around the world. In this work, we’ve been guided by openness to the excellent ideas of people close to the issues, by collaboration with partners we respect immensely, and by a desire to create transformative change whose benefits multiply and are shared widely across society.

SNF aims to achieve a broad, lasting, and positive impact for people around the world and for society at large by funding nonprofit organizations and projects that exhibit strong leadership and sound management. SNF’s mission is broad by design, encompassing grants to nonprofit organizations across its four program areas of Arts and Culture, Education, Health and Sports, and Social Welfare.

The Foundation also supports collaborative initiatives with the public sector, like the major ongoing SNF Health Initiative, as a means of effectively addressing complex issues. Learn about SNF’s ongoing $100 million global COVID-19 relief initiative.

Other major grants have sought to encourage civic engagement and civil discourse, like the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, to create quality public space and resources for all, like the New York Public Library’s Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library, and to advance research with the potential to improve lives, like the SNF – DR River Campus at Rockefeller University.

Over the years, SNF has helped establish, through collaboration and exclusive support, several independent nonprofit organizations which are now close partners working with SNF toward a shared vision in their area of expertise:

  • iMEdD, which seeks to promote excellence in journalism by establishing a hub of innovative support and a strong international community of journalistic professionals
  • Regeneration & Progress, which helps makes the belief that everyone in Greece should have access to quality medical care a reality and promotes athletic activity as a basis for overall wellbeing
  • The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), a gift from the Foundation to the people of Greece, is a truly public space in Athens, Greece, that is home to the Greek National Opera, the National Library of Greece, one of the city’s largest green spaces, and a host of cultural programming and activities for all ages and interests
  • Vamvakou Revival, which seeks to bring vibrant new life to a small village in the Peloponnese as a model for rural revival everywhere

The monthly SNF DIALOGUES series, held through iMEdD, seeks to catalyze conversation on critical issues by creating a platform for an open, collaborative exchange of ideas. Each summer, SNF Nostos offers a celebration of bold ideas, classic summer fun, and togetherness that’s free and open to all.
